The film is framed as the recollections of Sergeant Galoup, a former French legionnaire stationed in Djibouti (he’s played with a mixture of cruel reserve and vigorous physicality with the great Denis Lavant). Loosely depending on Herman Melville’s 1888 novella “Billy Budd,” the film makes brilliant use of your Benjamin Britten opera that was likewise inspired by Melville’s work, as excerpts from Britten’s opus take over a haunting, nightmarish quality as they’re played over the unsparing training physical exercises to which Galoup subjects his regiment: A dry swell of shirtless legionnaires standing in the desert with their arms in the air and their eyes closed like communing with a higher power, or continuously smashing their bodies against a person another in a very series of violent embraces.

That being said, just one thing about “Lost Highway” is completely fixed: This is the Lynch movie that’s the most of its time. The relentless nihilism of Mike Leigh’s “Naked” generally is a hard pill to swallow. Well, less a pill than a glass of acid with rusty blades for ice cubes. David Thewlis, in the breakthrough performance, is with a dark night in the soul en path to the tip with the world, proselytizing darkness to any poor soul who will listen. But Leigh makes the journey to hell thrilling enough for us to glimpse heaven on just how there, his cattle prod of a film opening with a sharp shock as Johnny (Thewlis) is pictured raping a woman in the dank Manchester alley before he’s chased off by her family and flees to the crummy corner of east London.

A poor, indianporngirl overlooked movie obsessive who only feels seen through the neo-realism of his country’s national cinema pretends to get his favorite director, a farce that allows Hossain Sabzian to savor the dignity and importance that Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s films experienced allowed him to taste. When a Tehran journalist uncovers the ruse — the police arresting the harmless impostor while he’s inside the home from the affluent Iranian family where he “wanted to shoot his next film” — Sabzian arouses the interest of the (very) different nearby auteur who’s fascinated by his story, by its inherently cinematic deception, and because of the counter-intuitive probability that it presents: If Abbas Kiarostami staged a documentary around this guy’s fraud, he could proficiently cast Sabzian since the lead character from the movie that Sabzian had always wanted someone to make about his suffering.
